Why skincare ingredients matter
While we’re working on the internal drivers of skin complaints, it’s an important aspect to look at what you’re actually applying onto your skin and whether this is contributing to poor skin quality in the first place.
We can absorb what we apply on our skin into the bloodstream
The skin is the body's largest organ and acts as a barrier against external substances. However, certain synthetic chemicals used in skincare products, such as parabens, phthalates, and triclosan, can be absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, these chemicals may circulate through various organs, including the liver.
It can cause extra burden on liver detoxification
The liver plays a crucial role in detoxification, metabolizing and eliminating toxins from the body. However, excessive exposure to synthetic chemicals, whether through skincare products or other sources, can place an additional burden on the liver. Over time, this increased workload may affect liver function and impair its ability to efficiently process and eliminate toxins from the body. For example, parabens can influence skin integrity through placing burden on antioxidant defence systems which have a role in maintaining skin integrity.
They can lead to hormonal disruption
Hormonal Disruption: Some synthetic chemicals used in skincare products, such as parabens and phthalates, have been identified as endocrine disruptors. These substances can mimic or interfere with the body's natural hormones, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances. The liver is responsible for metabolizing hormones, and any disruption in hormonal balance may impact liver function.
Accumulation of toxins
Accumulation of Toxins: Regular use of skincare products containing synthetic chemicals can lead to the accumulation of these substances in the body over time. While the liver plays a central role in detoxification, it may struggle to efficiently process and eliminate a high toxic burden. This accumulation of toxins may contribute to oxidative stress, inflammation, and potential liver damage.
It's important to note that the effects of synthetic skincare products on biochemical processes in the body that may actually contribute to poor skin interity.
This is why you want topical skincare that will enhance natural cell integrity, rather than damaging it over time.
